Desiree Ickerodt
Désirée’s two sculptures are inspired by the church’s inner architecture. She feels particularly drawn to the arch and space behind the altar. The female sculpture (on the right) imitates this arch. A church is a sacred place and being inside it induces inner reflection. The two sculptures’ inner spaces are also reflective and in stark contrast to their outer appearance. While making the female sculpture, she felt compelled to create a mate for her, a male counterpart.

Title: Inner Reflection – male & female
Materials: jesmonite, brass powder, paint
Dimensions: male: h17 x w11 x d14 cm;
female: h18.5 x w9 x d10 cm

Désirée is a sculptor exploring the juxtaposition of opposites – the masculine and the feminine, the within and the without, darkness and light, roughness and smoothness. Even though one pole of any polarity may often appear predominant, she believes that both poles are always present. She is questioning the concepts of differentiation and classification that are often only culturally defined but taken as naturally predetermined. She believes that by first becoming aware of our duality and then by synthesizing our double nature we can gain greater understanding and awareness.

Désirée is studying for a BA in Fine Art at the University of East London.

She has currently another show at Vyner Street Gallery, 23 Vyner Street.
