Emma Hobbins
With a back ground in book arts, anthropology and museums, Emma Hobbins produces intriguing objects that allude to many things, sometimes bizarre, sometimes whimsical and often comic. Ordinary biscuits such as the Garibaldi and the Nice are transformed into vehicles for musing on national identity, military history and what makes a cultural icon. The Communion Wafer is part of the ‘Biscuit’ series. Displayed together, and designed to be carefully handled and ‘read’, the collection appears as a type of Cabinet of Curiosities. Food and packaging frequently appear – ‘Fishes of the Sea’ displayed in this exhibition combines one of the most famous biblical miracles, canned fish and an undercurrent of the english suspicion of fish (unless it’s deboned and coated!)
